âIf you lick that window, Iâm going to make you eat soap until there are bubbles coming out of your nose, Mateo Cardenas! Get over here and sit down!â
âOh, thank God itâs you in here and not some uptight pain in the ass whoâs going to pretend sheâs not staring at me and my brood of monsters,â I heard Willow say from the doorway. I turned around and smiled at my friend only to see her frown and then snap, âBoy, what did your mama just tell you?â
I whipped my head around and saw Tay with his tongue out, ready to lick the window. âGet over here now!â
Willow and four of her children made their way into the waiting room, and she sat in the chair across from mine. Her two-year-old, Flint, scrambled out of her lap and followed his three-year-old brother, Lazlo, to the toys in the corner along with Pearl, who was five. Opal, the seven-year-old, dropped down onto the chair next to Willow with a sigh. When I looked at her, she rolled her eyes and then turned to stare out the window.
âWeâre here for a personality transplant and some vaccinations. What are you in for?â
âCounseling to see why my son thinks itâs okay to lick every single thing and vaccinations.â
âGirl, you look exhausted. Are you feeling okay?â
âI feel fine, but I am exhausted. We were in the emergency room with Es last night after an altercation between her and Tay that ended with her arm being slammed in the pantry door. Sheâs got a cast now.â
âOh shit.â
âI had to trust my nine-year-old budding artist with a Sharpie she left the house with today. I can only imagine the graffiti thatâs all over the police department by now.â
âLoutâs up there with Jett right now.â
âOh, really?â I asked as I looked down at Rosie and took the little teacup she was offering me. I pretended to sip, trying so hard not to think of all the little kid germs that had to be covering the cup and then gave it back to her without gagging. âWhatâs Lout doing there?â
âHe went to see Nick and tell him that Emerald was dead-ass serious about what she said yesterday.â
My head snapped around, and I looked at Willow in shock. âShe was?â
âYep. Sheâs already got it planned out, Cindy. Sheâs just waiting for you and Nick to sign on the dotted line and meet her at the doctorâs office so he can plant the seed, so to speak.â
âYouâre serious,â I whispered in shock.
âYeah. I canât say I liked the way she dropped that bomb in the middle of the meeting yesterday, but she was sort of right. Everyone there really is family, so itâs not like she was giving away secrets. I just hate that she put you on the spot in front of everyone like that.â
âI never even considered asking Em . . .â
âI know, honey, and Em knows that too. She didnât need you to ask. Sheâs more than happy to volunteer.
